R410A Refrigerant Phase Out: What It Means for Homeowners and Why R32 Is the Future
When Cool You first began installing fully internal air conditioning systems in London apartments and listed buildings, R410A refrigerant was the industry’s product of choice. It replaced R22 as a more efficient, ozone-friendly refrigerant. This became the benchmark for high-performance cooling systems for over a decade.
Today, however, the industry is evolving again. It is driven by new UK and EU legislation aimed at reducing the environmental impact of synthetic refrigerants. The ongoing R410A phase-out UK air conditioning initiative forms part of this transition. It encourages homeowners and installers to move toward more sustainable, energy-efficient alternatives like R32.
R410A phase out in UK air conditioning. Why?
The phase-out of R410A is part of the UK’s commitment to the Fluorinated Greenhouse Gas (F-Gas) Regulation. Originally introduced under EU Regulation (EU) No 517/2014, it is now retained in UK law following Brexit.
The legislation aims to reduce the use of fluorinated gases with high Global Warming Potentials (GWPs) by 79% by 2030. This is compared with 2015 levels.
R410A, once considered an environmentally responsible replacement for R22, has a GWP of around 2,088. This is more than 2,000 times that of carbon dioxide.
Because of this, the UK Environment Agency and Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) have confirmed that the placing on the market of equipment using R410A will be restricted or banned. This will occur in stages between 2025 and 2030, depending on system type and charge size.
In practical terms, this means:
- Manufacturers are no longer producing new R410A systems for most domestic applications.
- Spare parts and components compatible with R410A are becoming harder to source.
- Servicing older systems will become more expensive and limited as reclaimed stocks decline.
This transition follows the same path as the earlier R22 phase-out, which ended in 2015, encouraging a move toward refrigerants with lower environmental impact.
Understanding the Environmental Drivers
Fluorinated gases like R410A are potent greenhouse gases. Although they do not deplete the ozone layer, they trap heat in the atmosphere far more effectively than carbon dioxide.
The UK’s Climate Change Committee and DEFRA’s 2023 update on the UK F-Gas Regulation (SI 2015/310) emphasise the need to accelerate the adoption of refrigerants with lower GWP values. This is important to meet the country’s Net Zero 2050 target.
At Cool You, our experience and expertise in the London market — coupled with our commitment to providing clients with the very best solutions — enabled us to see these changes coming well in advance.
By mid to late 2020, we had transitioned all our systems to R32 refrigerant. This ensures that every new Cool You installation meets the highest standards for energy efficiency, environmental responsibility, and long-term compliance.
This proactive approach means our customers continue to enjoy complete peace of mind. They know their systems are future-ready, fully compliant, and built around the latest technology.
The Rise of R32 – A Smarter, Greener Choice
R32 is now the industry’s preferred refrigerant for residential systems.
It represents a new generation of cleaner, more efficient cooling technology, and is central to the F-Gas Regulation’s long-term compliance goals.
Here’s why R32 is the superior replacement for R410A:
- Environmentally Responsible
R32 has a GWP of 675 — that’s nearly 70% lower than R410A. This reduction significantly reduces the overall carbon footprint of each installed system. - More Energy Efficient
R32 systems operate at higher efficiency levels, often achieving A++ energy ratings. They require less refrigerant to deliver the same cooling power, helping homeowners lower their electricity bills and energy use. - Easier to Service
As a single-component refrigerant, R32 is easier for engineers to handle, recover, and recycle. This simplifies servicing and supports a more sustainable maintenance cycle. - Improved Performance and Comfort
Because R32 transfers heat more effectively, systems can cool faster, run quieter, and maintain more stable indoor temperatures — perfect for modern London homes where comfort and discretion matter.
What Homeowners Should Know
If your air conditioning system currently uses R410A, you can continue to use it safely for the time being. However, as the phase-out progresses, the availability of R410A and compatible components will become limited.
The Environment Agency advises homeowners to plan ahead by ensuring systems are regularly maintained by an F-Gas-certified engineer and by considering future-ready options with low-GWP refrigerants when replacement time comes.
Doing so will:
- Ensure compliance with upcoming legislation.
- Protect against rising maintenance costs.
- Improve overall efficiency and reliability.
